POKOTABI / Yamani
やまに
Oji izakaya Yamani serves down-to-earth pub fare beneath walls covered in handwritten strips, from whale and bonito sashimi to spicy pork with cucumber, dojo loach hot pot, and simmered pork tofu.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Slip inside Yamani and the first thing that catches the eye is the wall-to-wall array of handwritten menu slips, led by an impressive seafood roster. Offerings span prime whale sashimi with a firm, savory chew, rich cuts of fatty bonito and tuna, and seasonal catches like horse mackerel and sardine, all priced reasonably. With a cold draft beer or sake in hand, picking a sequence of raw fish specials from the day’s board is half the pleasure.
The hot dishes supporting the sashimi are tailored to seasoned drinkers. Pork with cucumber delivers crisp texture with a sharp, spicy kick that demands another sip of alcohol, while the deeply simmered, generous pork tofu is another longstanding fixture. The kitchen also prepares items less common in casual drinking spots, including dojo loach hot pot, tempura, and deep-fried seafood, giving you endless ways to assemble small plates.
Though an unpretentious watering hole, Yamani also maintains a solid line of set meals, ramen, and omurice. With counter stools alongside raised tatami seating, the space retains a distinct warmth from the Showa era, welcoming a quiet solo cup just as naturally as an evening drink among friends. Note that payment is cash only, so keep bills and coins ready.
